Theme: Anti-XV (for patron Phleb)

Author/Opus: This is the 129th puzzle from our contributing puzzlemaster Serkan Yürekli.

Rules: Standard Sudoku rules. Also, when the numbers in two cells sharing an edge add up to 5, a V is marked on that edge; when the numbers in two cells sharing an edge add up to 10, an X is marked on that edge. (For clarity, as no symbols appear in the grid below, there are never any edge-adjacent cells that sum to 5 or 10.)

Answer String: Enter the 6th row from left to right, followed by a comma, followed by the 5th column from top to bottom.

Time Standards (highlight to view): Grandmaster = 5:00, Master = 7:30, Expert = 15:00

This is my first time seeing this Sudoku variation. Those rules look incomplete to me– as stated, it seems the X and V add nothing to the puzzle.

Am I correct in assuming there must be exactly 1 X and V in every row and column as well?

This example with X and V may help you. The cell boundaries are where these symbols sit, just like in Consecutive Sudoku. A puzzle with no X or V marked would mean things logically like 1 is not next to 4 or 9 so that is a difference from Classic Sudoku

      • Joe F says:

Oh! I get it. I thought I was adding the X and V as I went along, and limiting the available numbers that way.

        It didn’t work.
